3 Tips for Raising Pigs Outside
September 30, 2019The Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Animal Facilities Inspection division hosted its second biennial Small Animal Facilities Seminar on June 7 and 8, 2019, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Salina, Kansas. The purpose of the Small Animal Facilities Seminar is to provide animal health information and education to the multiple small animal license types found in the state of Kansas. Currently, there are over 900 licensed small animal facilities in Kansas, including breeders, rescue shelters, pet shops and boarding & training kennels.
Brent Brown, Engineering Manager at Osborne, was invited to host a breakout session on the topic of ventilation and its importance in these types of facilities. Attendees learned about adding or improving ventilation systems within their facilities for the sake of animal and human health. Osborne’s AGRI-AIDE® ventilation products, such as Slant-Wall exhaust fans, Super Jet™ circulation fans, Auto-MAX® fresh air inlets, and fiberglass-reinforced composite roof cupolas were highlighted in the presentation and in literature handouts provided to the audience. The “Do’s and Don’ts” of ventilation systems and sample plans of complete kennel ventilation systems, designed by Osborne engineers, were also presented.
Other breakout session presentations at the seminar included shelter management to prevent and treat disease, zoonotic diseases (diseases spread between animals and humans), vaccines, toxicity, parasitology and understanding pet food labels. The Small Animal Facilities Seminar was sponsored by Kansas Pet Professionals and Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
Brent Brown, Engineering Manager at Osborne Industries, Inc., Osborne, Kansas, began his career 26 years ago as a Project Engineer with primary focus on ventilation product and system design for livestock and other animal facilities including, boarding, breeding and training kennels, rescue shelters, veterinary clinics and pet stores.
A Kansas State University graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Brown has acquired many other roles and responsibilities working in a diverse manufacturing environment, but remains actively involved in ventilation system design.
